Bringing nature to Turney School’s new Home Economics Building

Bringing nature to Turney School’s new Home Economics Building
  •  37m² living wall with 1,300+ plants adds natural beauty to Turney School.
  •  Automated irrigation and remote monitoring keep plants healthy year-round.
  •  A sustainable, tech-driven feature enhancing the school’s learning environment.

Inleaf was commissioned to design, supply and install a striking external living wall at Turney School as part of the finishing works for the school’s new Home Economics building.

The Inleaf team completed this project in just over a week during the 2025 summer holidays, ensuring minimal disruption to school activities. This project consisted of a living wall that spans 37m2 and includes over 1,300 plants, arranged in natural swathes across the wall. Due to the nature of the building we three window openings were incorporated into the design.

A diverse mix of species was chosen to provide texture, colour, and seasonal interest. These include Asplenium Scolopendrium, Blechnum Spicant, Carex Morrowii ‘Ice Dance’, Gaultheria Procumbens, Hedera Helix ‘Shamrock’, Liriope Muscari, Pachysandra terminalis, Tiarella ‘Spring Symphony’, Vinca Minor, Geranium Macrorrhizum, and Heucherella ‘Solar Eclipse’.

The wall uses the Fytotextile living wall system, supported by Inleaf’s advanced irrigation system.  The Fytotextile living wall system worked well due to its ability to be tailored to the exact space and proven use across thousands of projects across the World. Practical benefits also include large plant pockets to support larger plants and a fire rating which was important in the context.

This system features:

  • Automatic watering with sensor control for optimum hydration.
  • Integrated fertiliser dosing during the growing season.
  • Remote monitoring and adjustment via the internet.

Inleaf continues to provide proactive maintenance, combining remote oversight with regular on-site horticultural visits to keep the wall thriving year round.

The Turney School living wall is not only a visually impressive addition to the campus but also a sustainable, technology-driven feature that enhances the learning environment while showcasing the benefits of green infrastructure.
